Mackenyu Cast as Lead in Live-Action ‘Mashle’ Film After 3-Year Body Transformation

Actor Mackenyu (前田真剣佑) has been confirmed as the star of the upcoming live-action film adaptation of “Mashle: Magic and Muscles,” stepping into the role of the manga’s musclebound hero after what he describes as three years of dedicated physical preparation.

“From the day I received the offer, I spent three years building a body convincing enough for the fans to accept,” Mackenyu said in a statement accompanying the announcement. The live-action project was revealed on November 4, following speculation online over who would be cast as the lead.

“Mashle” was created by Hajime Komoto (甲本一) and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The story is set in a world where magical ability determines a person’s worth, but its hero, Mash Burnedead, has no magic at all — only overwhelming physical strength built through relentless training. He sets out to become a “Divine Visionary,” the magic world’s strongest title, in order to protect the father who raised him.

Directing the film is Yuichi Fukuda, known for live-action hits including the “Gintama” series and “SAKAMOTO DAYS.” Mackenyu, who has built a reputation for physically demanding roles — including Enishi Yukishiro in “Rurouni Kenshin: The Final” and Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” — said he aimed to convey Mash’s largely wordless emotions through sheer physical presence rather than dialogue.

Fukuda recalled that Mackenyu arrived for the first day of filming with an exaggerated physique to match the character, joking that his star had shown up “built like Mash” down to the proportions. A teaser trailer released alongside the announcement features a deer startled by Mackenyu performing rapid-fire bench presses. The film’s official site has also been redesigned to resemble a magic-world newspaper, and the production has teased that something tied to Mash’s favorite food, cream puffs, will happen on the 19th of every month leading up to release.

“Mashle” is set for release in Japan on March 19, 2027, distributed by Toho with involvement from Warner Bros.

Who is Mackenyu?

Mackenyu (前田真剣佑) is a Japanese actor known for action-heavy roles, including the villain Enishi Yukishiro in “Rurouni Kenshin: The Final” and Roronoa Zoro in Netflix’s live-action “One Piece” series. He has built a career around physically intense performances that draw on martial arts and stunt work, making him a frequent choice for adaptations requiring major on-screen transformations.

Author’s Comment

Three years in the gym for one role — only in Japan does an actor treat a manga adaptation like an Olympic training cycle, and only here does the fandom treat the resulting photos like a religious event. I love it, honestly. This is the same culture that turns a single bench-press clip into a national news chyron, and somehow it works, because the commitment is real and everyone can see it. Fukuda teaming up with Mackenyu again is the safe, crowd-pleasing move studios make when they want a guaranteed opening weekend rather than a risk. Just don’t expect subtlety — expect muscles, and lots of them.
