Mikio Date (伊達みきお, 51), one half of the popular Japanese comedy duo Sandwichman, has been hospitalized after suffering a cerebral infarction (stroke), the duo announced on their official website on August 28. Date will take an indefinite break from all activities to focus on treatment.
According to the announcement, Date is currently undergoing treatment in hospital. His comedy partner, Takeshi Tomizawa (富澤たけし), addressed the news directly with an update on Date’s condition, saying that his “head and body are doing well” and that he has been walking around the hospital. Tomizawa also confirmed that Sandwichman’s entire live tour has been cancelled as a result, apologizing to fans: “To everyone who was looking forward to the live tour, I am very sorry.” The pair said they will continue consulting with Date’s doctors as they work toward a return to activities.

Sandwichman is one of Japan’s most well-known comedy duos (owarai konbi), made up of Tomizawa and Date.
