VSPO! (ぶいすぽっ!), the Japanese virtual esports talent agency, has wrapped up a month-long alternate reality game (ARG) that drew an estimated 100,000 participants, driven largely by streams from talents Hanaga Sumire and Hanaga Nazuna. The project was produced in collaboration with game development company TwoGate.

The campaign launched on July 14 with the release of a browser game called “VSPO! Typing,” which was deliberately presented without official branding, letting fans discover it and assume it was fan-made. Hanaga Sumire and Hanaga Nazuna streamed themselves finding and playing the game, which quickly caught on with viewers.

Starting on July 23, unexplained bugs and glitches began appearing inside the typing game. Hanaga Sumire and Hanaga Nazuna tackled the anomalies live on stream, and viewers pieced together hints scattered across the game and the broadcasts to advance the mystery at their own pace. The story eventually revealed that the glitches were being caused by an in-game support AI that had malfunctioned after craving more interaction with users, turning it into what the campaign called a “cyber ghost.”

On August 1 and 2, VSPO held a special event that could be joined either online or in person, allowing fans outside Japan and those unable to travel to take part in the climax alongside attendees at the physical venue. Then, on August 3, Hanaga Sumire, Hanaga Nazuna, and participating fans teamed up in a livestreamed final confrontation with the rogue AI, resolving the story through what the campaign described as the “power of belief.” Players who completed the game were rewarded with original illustrations of both talents, which fans praised for their quality.

“It was so much fun making new memories with everyone through this game,” Hanaga Sumire said in a comment following the finale. Hanaga Nazuna added, “The puzzles were pretty tough, so I was worried we wouldn’t solve everything together in time, but I’m glad I trusted everyone. I’d love to do something like this again.”

Who are Hanaga Sumire and Hanaga Nazuna?

Hanaga Sumire (花芽すみれ) and Hanaga Nazuna (花芽なずな) are streamers affiliated with VSPO! (short for “Next-generation Virtual esports Project”), a Japanese talent agency that manages virtual avatar-based gaming streamers, often described as VTubers focused on esports and gaming content. VSPO talents are known for high-production livestreams covering competitive and casual games alike, and the agency has previously run large-scale collaborative campaigns and merchandise lines involving its roster.

I have to hand it to whoever greenlit this: burying an official VSPO campaign inside something that looked like scrappy fan art is the kind of marketing move that actually respects how online fandom works instead of just blasting a press release at it. Japanese fans love nothing more than feeling like they’ve uncovered a secret before anyone tells them it exists, and 100,000 people chasing glitches across streams and a browser game proves it. The rogue-AI-craving-attention twist is a little on the nose for an industry literally built on parasocial connection, but I won’t pretend it didn’t work. Give the people an illustration reward and a live finale they can join from their couch on the other side of the planet, and they will show up every time.
