Mikio Date (伊達みきお), 51, one half of the popular Japanese comedy duo Sandwichman, is taking an indefinite break from work after being diagnosed with a cerebral infarction, his talent agency announced on August 28 via its official website.
According to the announcement, Date is currently hospitalized and will focus on treatment and rest for the time being. The agency said he will work with his doctors to determine a timeline for returning to activities. As a result of the diagnosis, all dates on Sandwichman’s “Live Tour 2026” have been cancelled, and Date’s comedy partner, Takeshi Tomizawa, is expected to continue public and broadcast appearances on his own while Date recovers.
While the agency’s statement did not specify an exact length for the break, some Japanese outlets reported that Date’s hiatus is expected to continue through the end of 2026 as he prioritizes his recovery. No further details on the severity of his condition have been disclosed.
Who is Sandwichman?
Sandwichman is one of Japan’s most recognizable owarai (comedy) duos, formed by Mikio Date and Takeshi Tomizawa. The pair are best known for their manzai (stand-up comic dialogue) act and are regular fixtures on Japanese variety and talk shows. Beyond comedy, the duo has become closely associated with disaster-relief charity work in the Tohoku region following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, an effort they have continued for more than a decade.

A cerebral infarction is nothing to mess around with, so I’m genuinely relieved the agency just pulled the plug on the whole tour instead of quietly hoping he’d tough it out for the fans, which is very on-brand for this industry, sadly. Sandwichman built a chunk of their reputation on showing up for Tohoku year after year, so it feels fitting that the goodwill is flowing back to them now. I’ll say it plainly: rest actually means rest, Date-san, Tomizawa can hold the fort.
