Ado Surprise-Releases ‘Kanja A,’ Written by Idol Yoeko, on Her 24th Birthday

Ado (Ado) rang in her 24th birthday on October 24 with a surprise gift for fans: a new single called “Kanja A” (“Patient A”), released digitally the same day. The song was written and composed by Yoeko, an artist Ado has repeatedly named as a major influence on her own music.

“Kanja A” frames society as a stage play, with the narrator cast as a performer forced to smile for the crowd while seething underneath. According to the release, the lyrics depict a protagonist who keeps up appearances in public while silently sticking her tongue out at the world in private, channeling frustration and quiet rebellion against those around her.

A music video dropped alongside the single on YouTube, illustrated by manga artist Tomo Kobone and directed by visual artist Cymo. Set in black and white, the video follows a student version of Ado enrolled in the drama club at the fictional “Niconico High School,” who appears to be targeted by unkind classmates throughout the clip.

In a statement, Ado said the song was written for her by Yoeko, with illustrations by her favorite manga artist Tomo Kobone and visuals by Cymo, adding that the video’s protagonist represents a portrait of who she is as a person. Yoeko, for her part, congratulated Ado on her birthday and said she wrote “Kanja A” as a non-fiction piece meant to be sung on a scale she herself couldn’t achieve, entrusting the song to Ado’s voice. Yoeko also noted she makes a cameo appearance on the track’s chorus. Illustrator Tomo Kobone added that the video asks viewers to question whether the bullying depicted is “real,” or only real within the protagonist’s own mind.

Who is Ado?

Born in 2002, Ado began her career in January 2017 by posting a cover of the Vocaloid song “Kimi no Taion” (“Your Body Temperature”) to Niconico Douga as an uta-i-te, or anonymous singing performer. Her 2020 major-label debut single “Usseewa” became a nationwide sensation and turned her into one of Japan’s most recognizable vocalists almost overnight. She has since released a steady stream of original songs, put out her debut album “Kyogen” in January 2022, and played the singing voice of the character Uta in the hit 2022 film “ONE PIECE FILM RED.” In 2025, marking five years since her major debut, Ado released her first best-of album and embarked on her first-ever dome tour. She is scheduled to play a two-day stadium show at Nissan Stadium in Kanagawa in July 2026.

Author’s Comment

Happy birthday, Ado — and what a gift you gave yourself, letting Yoeko, the artist you’ve name-dropped as an idol for years, finally write you a song. I love this for her, and honestly, I love it for us: watching an artist cash in her fangirl privileges in real time is one of the small joys of following Japanese pop music. There’s something very on-brand about Ado choosing her birthday to drop a track about smiling in public while seething inside — if you know anything about the uta-i-te world she came up in, the masked-singer-turned-superstar pipeline practically demands a song like this eventually. I just hope the gremlins in the YouTube comments give this one the love it deserves instead of immediately demanding another ‘Usseewa.’
