Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue (広末涼子) returned to acting on October 16, appearing in a reading play at Cotton Club in Tokyo’s Marunouchi district. It was her first acting work since leaving her longtime talent agency to go independent in February 2024.
Hirosue starred in “ACT/RYOKO HIROSUE meets The Little Prince,” a staged reading in which she took on nine separate roles over the course of the performance. Ahead of the show, she shared a message describing the challenge of playing nine characters in one production, writing that she felt pressure but would give it her best effort. She posted the comment alongside a photo of herself in a white shirt dress.
The appearance ends a gap of more than a year and a half since Hirosue’s last confirmed acting project, making it a notable step in her return to public-facing work following her 2024 split from her agency.
Who is Ryoko Hirosue?
Ryoko Hirosue is a veteran Japanese actress who has worked in film, television, and advertising since debuting as a teenage idol in the 1990s. She went on to build a long career as one of Japan’s most recognizable screen actresses across the 2000s and 2010s. In February 2024, she left her talent agency to continue her career independently, a decision that drew significant attention in Japanese entertainment media. Saturday’s reading play is her first acting credit since that transition.
Author’s Comment
Going independent and then vanishing from acting for a year and a half is exactly the kind of gap that makes Japanese entertainment reporters start whispering, so I’ll admit I’m relieved to see her back on a stage instead of just in headlines. And she didn’t exactly ease back in gently — nine roles in one reading play is a flex most comeback vehicles wouldn’t dare attempt. The white shirt dress, the humble "I’ll do my best" caption, zero drama — that’s textbook comeback etiquette in this industry. Give me boring and professional over scandalous any day.
