Production on Season 2 of the FX series “Shogun” has officially wrapped, with a special farewell video released on YouTube showing stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, and Ren Meguro (Snow Man) celebrating the end of a long shoot while still in costume.

The video opens with Sanada, who stars in and executive produces the series, thanking the cast and crew with the words “Otsukaresama deshita!” — a Japanese phrase used to acknowledge everyone’s hard work at the end of a job. Clips show the cast posing for group photos in costume, with Meguro smiling while holding a clapperboard and Mizukawa grinning alongside co-star Yuka Mukai, capturing the relaxed mood on set as filming came to a close.

“Shogun,” produced by FX under Disney, is based on James Clavell’s novel and follows a sweeping period drama set in feudal Japan. Season 1 depicted the tense buildup to a decisive battle for control of the country, drawing loosely on historical figures such as Tokugawa Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. Season 2 jumps forward ten years, centering on the intertwined fates of lord Yoshii Toranaga and English navigator John Blackthorne, known in the story as Anjin. Season 3 has already been confirmed.

Filming for Season 2 took place in Vancouver, Canada, beginning in January 2026. Season 1 is currently streaming exclusively on Disney+, and a release date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.

Who are Hiroyuki Sanada, Asami Mizukawa, and Ren Meguro?

Hiroyuki Sanada is a veteran Japanese actor with a decades-long career spanning Japanese and Hollywood productions, including “The Last Samurai,” “Mortal Kombat,” and the “John Wick” franchise. He stars in and executive produces “Shogun,” and won an Emmy Award for his work on Season 1. Asami Mizukawa is a well-known Japanese actress recognized for a wide range of film and television roles across romance and drama. Ren Meguro is a member of the popular boy band Snow Man who landed his role in “Shogun” Season 2 through an audition process, marking a notable step into English-language television for the idol-turned-actor.

Author’s Comment

A wrap video where the cast looks this genuinely happy after a shoot that started all the way back in January? That’s not just PR polish, that’s relief. I love that it’s Sanada, basically the guy running this whole production, who leads the "otsukaresama" send-off — that one word carries the weight of a hug and a sigh of relief at the same time, and it’s very on-brand for how seriously Japanese sets treat the ritual of acknowledging everyone’s grind. And Meguro holding that clapperboard like a trophy is honestly kind of sweet. Idol-to-prestige-drama crossovers get eye rolls sometimes, but landing this through an actual audition is more than most can claim. Now we all just wait on Disney for a release date, as usual.
