Junya — known online as junya1gou — is a Japanese comedian and video creator who built one of the largest audiences on the internet without saying a word. His short videos are pure slapstick: homemade contraptions, exploding soda bottles, kitchen disasters and deadpan reactions, all filmed in ordinary Japanese apartments and understandable in any language. That wordless formula turned a creator with no television background into one of the most-followed people on the planet.

The scale is hard to overstate. As of 2026 his main YouTube channel has more than 38 million subscribers, and his TikTok account counts more than 40 million followers. In January 2023 he became the first Japanese YouTuber ever to pass 20 million subscribers, and he later became the first to clear 30 million. For nearly three years, from late 2021 to mid-2024, his was the single most-subscribed YouTube channel in Japan.

Rise to Fame

Junya was born on November 28, 1994. Unlike most Japanese entertainers, he did not come up through television or the comedy-agency system that produces Japan’s professional comedians. Instead, he started posting absurd clips on TikTok in 2018, when the platform was still finding its footing in Japan. His visual, dialogue-free style spread fast: he hit one million TikTok followers in February 2020, became Japan’s most-followed TikTok creator by May of that year, and in July 2020 became the first Japanese creator to reach 10 million followers on the platform.

YouTube came next, with a rocky start. His first channel, launched in August 2020, was suspended the following month, so he relaunched his main channel, Junya.じゅんや, on September 14, 2020. The reboot barely slowed him down: the new channel passed one million subscribers in about two months and reached 10 million in 394 days, the fastest pace any Japanese channel had achieved at the time.

Then, in October 2021, came the milestone that made Japanese internet history: Junya’s channel overtook HikakinTV. Hikakin is widely regarded as the godfather of Japanese YouTube — the man who made “YouTuber” a household word in Japan — so a wordless prankster passing him after barely a year on the platform was a genuine changing of the guard. In January 2023 Junya pushed past 20 million subscribers, a first for any Japanese channel, and kept climbing from there. He is managed by Collab Asia, a creator agency active across Asia.

What Junya Is Known For

Junya works in what Japanese media call nonverbal shorts — comedy built entirely from images and sound rather than speech, a genre Japanese creators now dominate worldwide. A typical Junya video runs well under a minute and usually ends in chaos. His signature material includes:

  • Prop gags and do-it-yourself contraptions, like inflating a hoodie with a cola-and-Mentos fountain
  • Food experiments and pranks that end in sticky, self-inflicted disasters
  • Nose-humming renditions of trending songs and viral sounds, one of his best-known running bits
  • Recurring sketch series, including his classroom skits about the girl in the next seat and his own goofy “Junya dance”

Because none of it requires understanding Japanese, his videos travel far beyond Japan — a sharp contrast with talk-driven Japanese YouTubers whose reach stops at the language barrier. More than 20 of his videos have passed 100 million views, and in December 2021 TikTok Japan honored him with a special prize at its Creator Award.

Recent Years

Junya’s reign as Japan’s most-subscribed YouTuber ended on July 22, 2024, when ISSEI — a fellow Japanese creator working in the same nonverbal genre — edged past him at around 37 million subscribers. Junya had held the top spot for roughly two years and nine months. There was a certain symmetry to it: he was dethroned by the very style of wordless, globally aimed comedy he had helped prove could work.

As of late 2026, Junya remains firmly among Japan’s biggest channels, with more than 38 million subscribers, and new videos continue to appear on his main channel. Whatever the rankings say, his legacy is already secure: he showed that a Japanese creator could reach the global mainstream without speaking English — or speaking at all — and opened the door for the current wave of Japanese nonverbal stars such as ISSEI, Sagawa and Bayashi, who have built enormous global followings of their own.

FAQ

Why is Junya (junya1gou) so famous?

Junya became famous for wordless slapstick shorts — pranks, contraptions and food experiments that need no translation. The format gave him a huge global audience, making him the first Japanese YouTuber to pass 20 million (and later 30 million) subscribers and one of the most-followed TikTok creators in the world.

Is Junya the most subscribed YouTuber in Japan?

Not anymore. Junya held the No. 1 spot in Japan from October 2021, when he overtook Hikakin, until July 2024, when fellow nonverbal creator ISSEI passed him. As of 2026 he still has more than 38 million subscribers and remains one of Japan’s largest channels.

Does Junya ever talk in his videos?

Almost never. His comedy is built on sight gags, sound effects and his trademark nose-humming instead of dialogue. That nonverbal style is deliberate — it lets viewers anywhere in the world enjoy his videos without understanding Japanese.
