Jun Nakada (中田潤), vocalist of the punk band ILL BONE, has died suddenly, the group announced on its official X account. According to the announcement, Nakada passed away on August 15.
In a statement, ILL BONE’s members said the news came just as the band was preparing to welcome a new member and begin work on live performances and a new album. “We still haven’t been able to accept this reality,” the band wrote. No plans for the group’s future activities have been announced.

Jun Nakada was the vocalist of ILL BONE, a band that grew out of Zohan Igaku (造反医学), a group that had been active since 1979. ILL BONE built a devoted following on the strength of Nakada’s poetic, deadpan vocal delivery, paired with the powerful drumming of Sentaro Minowa (箕輪扇太郎), who also performed with Machizo Machida’s (町田町蔵) Jinmin Olympic Show. The band effectively went dormant in the late 1980s before resurfacing for an audience-free live show in September 2022, then fully reactivating in December 2023.

I don’t know much about Jun Nakada personally, but I know enough about Japan’s underground scene to recognize how rare it is for a band formed in 1979 to still matter to anyone in 2023. That reactivation wasn’t nostalgia bait — it was clearly a labor of love, from the band and the fans who kept showing up. My heart goes out to Sentaro Minowa and everyone who was gearing up to make new music with him. Sometimes the cruelest news isn’t the scandal — it’s just the silence where a song used to be.
