Comedian Great Gidayu (グレート義太夫), a longtime member of Beat Takeshi’s comedy troupe “Takeshi Gundan,” has died. He was 67.
According to FNN Prime Online, Great Gidayu was found collapsed on a staircase at his Tokyo apartment building on September 7. He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His talent agency said it was still confirming the details surrounding his death.
Who is Great Gidayu?
Great Gidayu built his career as one of the original members of Takeshi Gundan, the group of comedians and performers who rose to fame alongside legendary entertainer Beat Takeshi (Kitano Takeshi) starting in the 1980s. Over more than four decades in show business, he became a familiar face on Japanese television, known for his comedic timing and his long loyalty to the Takeshi Gundan brand of humor. In the early 2000s, he suffered a serious brain hemorrhage that left him with lasting physical effects, but he continued to appear on television and on stage in the years that followed, earning admiration from fans and colleagues for his perseverance.
