The Nara City Council election (39 seats) was held on July 20, 2025, and Hezumaryu (34), known as a former controversial YouTuber, was elected for the first time as an independent candidate.

On July 21, Hezumaryu announced his projected victory via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing gratitude to his supporters by stating, “Thank you so much.” While the official vote count has not yet been released, he is believed to have ranked among the top in terms of votes received, reportedly securing the third-highest number of votes.

In his campaign, Hezumaryu focused on community-based policies, such as strengthening patrols to protect deer in Nara Park, installing trash bins and security cameras in the park, and opposing large-scale solar panel developments. His campaign, centered on addressing local issues, combined with his strong presence on social media, appears to have broadened his support base.

Previously infamous for his controversial YouTube videos and multiple arrests, Hezumaryu had gained notoriety as a so-called “controversial YouTuber.” In recent years, however, he has worked to shift his image by participating in disaster relief efforts and animal protection activities, which he highlighted during the election as part of his efforts to contribute to society.

Following his election, he stated his intention to promote transparency in city governance and to actively share council activities with the public through social media. Attention is now focused on how he will utilize his online influence in his role as a councilor, as well as his ability to handle legislative duties.

Hezumaryu’s election marks the rise of a new type of politician whose personal media presence plays a central role in their political success. Voters are now watching closely to see what kind of policy achievements he will pursue as a member of the Nara City Council.
