New Ghost in the Shell TV Anime Debuts With Manga-Faithful Comedic Tone

The new TV anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, titled THE GHOST IN THE SHELL, began broadcasting on July 7, 2026, and its first episode is winning praise online for a lighter, more comedic approach that fans say stays true to Masamune Shirow’s original manga rather than mirroring Mamoru Oshii’s iconic 1995 film.

Episode 1, titled “PROLOGUE + SUPER SPARTAN i,” aired in the Kansai TV/Fuji Television network’s Tuesday 11 p.m. “Ka-Anibaru!!” programming block and is also available on Prime Video and other streaming services. The series is animated by Science SARU and based on Shirow’s manga Ghost in the Shell, originally published by Kodansha.

Viewers on social media welcomed the show’s comedic tone, saying it captures the original comic’s playful energy in a way Oshii’s more somber film did not, with many writing that the premiere was “exactly what I expected” and “what I’ve been waiting for.” Director Ken Hashimoto said a scene depicting Motoko Kusanagi descending via optical camouflage was deliberately set in daylight to match the manga, adding that the episode is packed with shot-for-shot references longtime readers will recognize.

Akio Otsuka, widely known for voicing Batou in Oshii’s original films, congratulated the new production on social media, calling the premiere “a great success” and applauding the cast and crew.

The opening theme, “GO GHOST,” is performed by rock band King Gnu, while the ending theme, “Blue,” comes from millennium parade featuring Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar. Producers also announced a tie-in with Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: roughly 40,000 posters promoting the ministry’s 2026 science and technology white paper, featuring key art from the series, are being distributed to schools, boards of education, and science museums nationwide.

Who is behind Ghost in the Shell?

Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk franchise created by manga artist Masamune Shirow, whose original comic began serialization in the late 1980s. Set in a near-future Japan where cybernetic augmentation is common, the story follows Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 as they investigate crimes involving hacked minds and rogue AI. The franchise became internationally known through Oshii’s 1995 animated film, which influenced later Hollywood productions such as The Matrix. This new TV series reunites familiar voices from earlier Ghost in the Shell anime, including Maaya Sakamoto as Kusanagi, Kazuhiro Yamaji as Daisuke Aramaki, Hiroki Yasumoto as Batou, Yuichi Nakamura as Togusa, and Kosuke Goto as Ishikawa.

THE GHOST IN THE SHELL continues weekly on Tuesdays at 11 p.m. on the Kansai TV/Fuji TV network, with new episodes also rolling out on streaming platforms.
