The Japanese thriller The Exit 8 finally made its terrestrial television debut on Friday Road Show (Kinro), and one supporting performance hit so hard that it sent viewers straight to social media — not to praise it, but to complain about how irritating it was.
Actor Hirota Otsuka (大塚ヒロタ), who plays an unnamed “shouting man” in the film, revealed on X that he had been receiving a wave of complaints ever since the broadcast aired. “Ever since last night’s broadcast of The Exit 8, the complaints about the shouting man haven’t stopped,” he wrote, sharing the wave of reactions he had received.
Rather than being offended, fans quickly turned his post into a celebration of his acting instead. Replies flooded in calling his performance “too real,” with one user writing that watching it felt like seeing an actual exhausted, short-tempered commuter losing his temper late at night. Others said the character’s brief appearance was essential to the story, with several commenting that “the ending wouldn’t work without the shouting man.”
The Exit 8 is based on the viral video game of the same name by KOTAKE CREATE, in which players must spot subtle anomalies while escaping an endless underground passage on repeat. The live-action adaptation stars Kazunari Ninomiya, Yamato Kochi, and Nana Komatsu, is directed by Genki Kawamura, and was written by Kentaro Hirase and Kawamura, with music by Yasutaka Nakata and Shohei Amimori. The film opened in Japanese theaters in 2025 before making its free-TV premiere this week.

Hirota Otsuka is a Japanese stage and screen actor who also works as a part-time lecturer at the University of Tokyo. According to his own social media profile, he spent his twenties training in theater in New York and Italy, where he studied Commedia dell’arte, a centuries-old Italian style of masked comedic theater. He now writes, directs, and performs with his own troupe, Teatro Commedia dell’Arte, and is a devoted supporter of J.League club FC Tokyo. His brief but memorable turn as the “shouting man” in The Exit 8 has made him one of the most talked-about supporting players since the film’s TV broadcast.

Look, if your job is to play a character so obnoxious that an entire country wants to reach through the screen and shake him, and instead they end up praising your range — honey, that’s not a complaint, that’s a standing ovation. Japanese Twitter has a very specific soft spot for the "so annoying he’s iconic" bit part, and Otsuka just joined the hall of fame right next to every unbearable extra who ever stole a scene. I love that his own fans’ first instinct was to screenshot the hate mail and turn it into a highlight reel — that’s peak internet, and honestly, peak Japan. Teaching Commedia dell’arte by day, making a whole nation furious on a train car by night: incredible range. Somebody give this man a bigger, more insufferable role immediately.
