YouTube will host YouTube Music Weekend 12.0, a three-day online music festival running from August 21 to 23, 2026, streaming or premiering studio-shot performances and music videos from 113 artists. Korean virtual boy band PLAVE has been tapped to headline the festival’s opening day, marking the 12th edition of the annual event with what organizers describe as its most genre-spanning, cross-border lineup yet, pulling from anime, gaming and internet-culture-driven music scenes.
Day 1 is headlined by PLAVE, Day 2 by the Pokemon x Hatsune Miku collaboration and singer Ado, and Day 3 by veteran musician Haruomi Hosono performing alongside puppet act “Puppet Sun Sun,” plus a tie-in performance connected to the anime Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – Conflict Arc. No VTuber act was selected as a headliner this time around, but the event’s virtual-talent presence has grown noticeably compared to previous editions.
KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO is sending its largest group yet, including label artists Kaf (花譜) and Isekai Joucho (ヰ世界情緒) alongside several other acts from the roster. Hololive Production is represented by solo singer Sakura Miko as well as the unit ReGLOSS and Hakos Baelz, while Nijisanji sends VOLTACTION and 3SKM. RK Music’s KMNZ and VESPERBELL round out the virtual-idol contingent, and the bill also includes Kizuna AI, Peanuts-kun and Shigure Ui.
Who is PLAVE?
PLAVE is a five-member virtual boy band from South Korea that debuted in 2023 and has since become one of the most commercially successful acts in the growing virtual idol space, known for pairing K-pop idol staples like choreography and fan events with anime-style 3D avatars and live-band instrumentation. The group’s booking as a headliner for a YouTube-run global music showcase is another marker of virtual pop acts moving from niche fandom into mainstream festival lineups.
For readers less familiar with the rest of the bill: Kizuna AI is widely credited as one of the pioneers of the VTuber medium since her 2016 debut, while Hololive and Nijisanji are two of Japan’s largest VTuber talent agencies. KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO is a Tokyo-based virtual talent and music label built around artists like Kaf and Isekai Joucho, and RK Music is the agency behind duo KMNZ.
The full 113-artist lineup will be available via the event’s official YouTube playlist and each participating artist’s own channel across the three-day run.
Author’s Comment
I love that we’ve reached a point where a Korean virtual boy band can headline a bill that also features Ado and a puppet duetting with a 78-year-old synth-pop legend, and nobody involved thinks that’s strange anymore. But look closer and notice what didn’t happen: for all the VTuber talent packed into this lineup, none of them got the headliner slot. Everyone wants virtual talent’s numbers on the poster; fewer people want to put them at the very top of it. Still, watching KAMITSUBAKI STUDIO show up with its biggest contingent yet, and Kizuna AI sharing a bill with a generation of artists who grew up watching her, is its own quiet victory lap.
