Saya Hiyama (檜山沙耶), the former Weathernews weather caster turned freelance announcer, has opened up about the major life changes that led her to leave her longtime employer and step into a new chapter as a wife and soon-to-be mother.
In a recent interview, Hiyama said her marriage was “a big reason” behind her decision to resign from Weathernews. She described following her husband, professional tennis player Yoshihito Nishioka (西岡良仁), on his travels overseas as part of her new routine, balancing her own broadcasting career with supporting him on tour. Hiyama and Nishioka registered their marriage, and in August the couple announced that Hiyama was expecting their first child, according to Sports Hochi.
Reflecting on entering her 30s, Hiyama said the combination of marriage and pregnancy has reshaped her priorities. “The axis of my life has changed,” she said, describing how her sense of what matters most has shifted since leaving her stable company position for a freer, if less predictable, career as an independent announcer.
Who is Saya Hiyama?
Saya Hiyama built a loyal fanbase as an on-air weather presenter for Weathernews, the Japanese weather information company known for its dedicated broadcast channel. Her clear delivery and approachable style made her one of the company’s most recognizable personalities before she left to go freelance. Her husband, Yoshihito Nishioka, is a professional tennis player who has represented Japan on the ATP Tour and at the Olympics, known for his tenacious baseline game despite being one of the shorter players in the men’s game.
With a new baby on the way, Hiyama indicated she plans to keep building her freelance broadcasting work while adjusting to motherhood and continuing to support her husband’s career on the tour.
Author’s Comment
Look, I love a good "I quit my stable job for love" story, and this one’s got all the ingredients: a beloved weather girl, a scrappy tennis pro, and a baby on the way. Japan’s announcer-to-freelancer pipeline is basically its own genre at this point — stable company job, steady paycheck, zero flexibility, versus freelance freedom with a side of financial chaos. She chose love and a passport full of tournament stamps, and honestly, good for her. Just don’t expect me to feel sorry for anyone trading a desk job for courtside seats in Melbourne. I’ll take that trade any day.
